What are the dates of the Fun City 2016 Saturday Academy?
The Spring Session starts on Saturday, January 16th. It meets every Saturday
through May 7th 2016, except for Saturday, March 26th (Spring Break).
The Fall Session starts on Saturday, September 17th and continues through
December 10th, except for November 26th (Saturday of Thanksgiving week).
Is there a charge for the Saturday Academy?
No, there is no charge. It is funded by the County of Boone,
by grants from foundations and civic organizations and contributions
of local citizens who want to help provide opportunities for children
to grow to their full potential. While there is no charge, there is an
expectation that parents will make sure their child attends on a regular,
weekly basis. Because there is no charge, they may not realize how important
the program is and that repeated failure to attend regularly will mean that
the child's place in the program will be taken by another child.
Is there an obligation from parents?
Yes, we require that parents attend a program orientation and at least two
parent group meeting per Spring and Fall semester. We ask them to volunteer
in the program at least on one Saturday during each semester. That way,
they get to know other parents whose children attend and they can also
personally see how the program is helping their child. It also allows them
to make suggestions about the program and how it can meet the needs of their

Can I enroll my child after the program starts, during the year?
Yes, but you need to make sure that there are open places, so call us at

Is transportation offered for the Saturday Academy?
Yes, to a limited number of children whose parents have no other form of
transportation and who live within a 10 mile radius. There are three conditions
to being picked up by the van: one that the child is ready when the van comes,
the next that the child cooperates with the van driver, and the last is that
the parent notifies Fun City Youth Academy staff at least by Thursday that the child will be
absent on the following Saturday.
Is there a meal for the Saturday Academy?
Yes, we start promptly at 11:30 am with a simple meal. There will be a snack
later in the session.
Are there special events and field trips for children participating in the
Yes, we have holiday events, which will be announced
in advance and some will include invitations to families to attend.
There will be occasional fieldtrips and parents will be asked to fill
out a permission slip for their child's participation.
Parental assistance in event preparation and fieldtrips is welcome
What are the dates of the Fun City 2016 Summer Academy?
The program starts on Monday, June 6th and it will end on Friday July
29th, 2016. Monday, July 4th will be observed as the Independence Day holiday.
The Summer Academy is a 5 day a week, 8 hour a day program, beginning at
8:20 am and ending at 4:20 pm. Parents need to be punctual in bringing and
picking up their children.
Is there an obligation from parents?
Yes, we require that parents attend two parent sessions during June and July and volunteer in the program at least once

Can I enroll my child after the program starts?
Yes, but space is limited, so it is better to enroll your student before the program starts.
Can I enroll my child after she or he have attended the Columbia School District's Summer School?
No. Because the Columbia Fun City Summer Academy is a joint program with the
Columbia Public Schools, parents must choose between enrolling their children
in the regular CPS Summer School and The Summer Academy.
Is transportation offered for the Summer Academy?
No, we are not able to provide transportation for children in the Summer Academy
at this time.
Is there a meal for the Summer Academy?
Yes, the students get a light breakfast and lunch. There will be a snack during
the afternoon session.
Is there swimming and other physical activities?
Yes, children swim once a week, at the ARC.
Note: the pool requires that all children have bathing suits
and swim trunks. Casual shorts and tops are not acceptable.
Are there special events and field trips for children participating in
the Summer Academy?
Yes, the last week of the Summer Academy has a number of special events
that culminate the special programs that we offer: visitors to programs
that show the work the children have done in the African American Heritage,
Art, Science and Entrepreneurship courses.
